As a spot of fun today I was looking at the great site Wordle. This site allows you to put in a load of text, whether random or from a story or publication, some clever analysis is done and Wordle then produces a picture of the common words used in the text, or "word cloud" as they like to call it.
So I decided to give it a go and wondered what I could use. It would have to be something in relation to Swansea and the first thing that jumped to mind was the latest issue of the local Council propaganda rag, The Swansea Leader (Jan 2010 edition).
This publication ends up on the door mats of most Swansea residents every few months. It is generally an excuse for the council to brag about what they've done, what awards they've given to themselves and generally how good a job they are doing.
So I took all the text from the Council spin-paper and dumped it in Wordle to see what it would produce.
What came out was quite attractive and gave interesting results. "Swansea" features prominently as the most common word, but it was nice to see that "people", "residents", "help" and "work" were also dominant.
Although, the word "Council" does also feature highlighy so perhaps there is a subliminal message going on that we don't know about. Who knows.....?
