An Elected Mayor for Swansea?

Can we read in to the fact that Swansea council's website has today been updated with details on the procedure to follow when calling for a referendum for a directly elected mayor?

It contains links to a pdf that formally states the number of electors required to call this referendum - 18,867. Now it could be just that the council wanted to provide up to date figures and make the procedure publicy available on their website. On the other hand, with the recent Gorseinon town council problems, the ongoing problems with transparent decision making within the Swansea cabinet system and the current selection of the Swansea mayor being based on longetivity, then it may account to something.

It's interesting that they also Tweeted the information.

Just under 19,000 to hold a referendum? That seems an achievable target if you ask me.

  1. You may have noticed that all the enthusiasm for on an elected mayor for Cardiff has died. I wonder why?

  2. Given the quality of the current crop of politicians in the city going for an elected mayor with real power would only be worthwhile if there were candidates of superior ability. Do any spring to mind?
