Took my son to the LC2 this evening. The weather was not good with hail, rain, wind and cold, but I'd promised him we'd go. Normally we visit during school holidays or at weekends. It is always busy and on one occasion we had to wait 2 hours for a swimming slot.
Anyway, during mid-week, the Edge (that's the swimming pool) opens at 4pm. We arrived shortly after this and I had a feeling it would be quiet there. Little did I know that there would only be 2 other people in the entire pool. During our time there only a dozen or so more people arrived. In fact there were more life guards present than there were swimmers.
At the time the LC2 opened there was some criticism over the pricing and opening hours. £7 for a swim and only open from 4pm on weekdays. But I think this is justified as there seems to be very little demand mid-week. The entry fee is reduced to £6 if you are a Swansea resident and the swim is for 2 hours (that's a bloody long time to get wrinkly). Children are £4 and they do a loyalty card that gives you a free swim after you've been there 4 times.
By the way if you collect Tesco Clubcard points you can redeem them for vouchers to use at the LC2. So £2.50 in Tesco vouchers gets you a £10 ticket for the LC2. Bargain.
My son and I really enjoyed ourselves. We went on the slides lots of times, the wave machine was on several times, we went around the river dozens of times then warmed up in the jacuzzi and had space to practice his swimming. I used to go to the original Leisure Centre when I was a boy, it was great fun and I know my son has as much fun at the latest one as I did at the original.
This is a truly great centre and Swansea should be proud of it. It's just a shame that more residents don't use it mid-week as I fear that in this period whereby the council is scraping for cash, it could be an easy option to cut costs by choosing to only open the LC2 pool at weekends.
